Diane - I worked in an HSE role for ADMA-OPCO in Abu Dhabi for 6 years. Within the department we had women working - in one case a national. Abu Dhabi is not Saudi - women can drive, go out alone, work, pretty much all the things you can do in the UK. The main difference is that you cannot work offshore on an oil rig. Even going for a day is difficult, and the same would be true for work in other male dominated remote locations. The UAE have been building up the manufacturing sector for a long time now to reduce their reliance on the oil and gas sector so there may well be opportunities for someone with your experience. You will have one big advantage - a prospective employer will not need to get you a visa, or pay repatriation costs, as you will already be in country. English is the major language between the locals, Europeans, Americans, Filipinos, Indians etc so that is another advantage you have. If the rules are still the same you will be able to get a driving licence by converting your UK licence into a UAE licence. It can be very enjoyable, I found the locals to be great, and very tolerant of our non-muslim lifestyles. Exploring the desert and mountains in the winter months was a fabulous way to get away from the noise of city life. By the way I am biased as I met my wife out there and our first child was born there. If you would like more detail you can contact me directly - my details are on my profile.

Hi I need help! My husband is in the process of being interviewed for a role out in Abu Dhabi. I am wondering how easy it is for women to secure health and safety roles within the UAE as the prospect of being out there and not working would drive me stir crazy! Can anyone help or give me any advice or tips if you have any experience of the UAE. Thanks :-)
