To work offshore you will require both an Oil & Gas UK Medical and Survival Training with MIST. It is unlikely that an employer will take you on without these and they are expensive items.
The other problem is experience, always the "chicken and the egg". One way round this is to look for locum posts, covering temporary absences of permanent staff because of illness, injury or training requirements. You can get quite reasonable day rates offshore so you can still earn an good salary this way. It also has the advantage of potentially getting experience on different rigs and installations quickly.
To go this route it is best to be self employed - it is tax advantageous. If you decide to go this route let me know and I can give you some advice on setting up your own company and all the other bits you will need to know - it is as difficult as people think.

by Mariza Ruas 9 months agoHi Richard,
Thank you very much for your post ad wise advise. I have been checking Kevin's posts and I have also joined oilandgaspeople.com.
I am very keen in working offshore to gain experience as I have none.
I am currently doing my NEBOSH certificate and will seat for my exams next month.
I was a member of IOSH but at some point the meetings we changed to afternoons instead of evenings, so due to work commitments I was unable to attend.
I had a look at the GOSH website and I am considering joining it.
Thank you once again.
Best regards,

Kevin (Site Owner) posts quite a few jobs from the Aberdeen area to HSE People so keep your eyes peeled. Also join Oilandgaspeople.com and upload your CV (Aberdeen being the Oil Capital of Europe). Obviously not all jobs on this site will be HSE related and so of those that are may involve offshore work which may or may not interest you. But all oil companies have large onshore HSE Departments.
See if you can generate a local network - often the best way into a job. Have you joined GOSH (Grampian Occupational Safety & Health)? (http://www.goshgroup.org.uk).
Good luck.
regards
