It seems to me that you are taking a responsible approach by completing the IGC. It will put you in the best position to help your clients. It is also good business as you will be speaking from competence.
With PPE selection the main areas that need to be understood are:
* Hazard identification
* Selection of adequate and suitable PPE
- Adequate = Effectiveness of PPE against the hazard
- Suitable = Fits the individual user
* Training in use of PPE
* Limitations of PPE
* Additional risk factors introduced by use of specific PPE
I think your problem will be when you see a better non-PPE based control measure for your client. Then you have a dilemma, lose potential sales in the short term, or gain long term trust. Of course it main also identify new business streams for you as well. -
by Richard Brown 11 months agoHi Ravi
There are three assessments in the IGC, two written assessments and a practical with a report. Each written assessment consists of 10 short questions and one essay question.
The short questions are as you describe, requiring accurate answers of knowledge derived from the syllabus.
However the two essay questions and the report will require you to show that you can integrate the knowledge you have gained for the scenario laid out in the exam question.
I believe the best way to do this is to place the elements of what you learn on to the health & safety management framework. By this I mean the process that an organisation creates to identify hazards and control risks. This approximates to:
* Hazard Identification
* Risk assessment
* Control of risk (both immediate and long term)
* Measurement of performance (leading and lagging indicators)
* Training & competence
* Management System Audit
* Management Review of system and creation of improvement goals
This is the Deeming cycle and is used in ISO9000, 14000 and OHSAS 18000. The HSE (UK) publication HSG65 also outlines this type of management feedback and can be obtained as a free download from http://www.hse.gov.uk/pubns/priced/hsg65.pdf
As well as helping your clients you will also be able to improve your own company's health and safety performance.
Good luck with the course.
