Find out more about HSE People Panel Member Neil Fisher

The HSE People Panel is made up of specialists across different areas who have volunteered to share their insight and experience with the HSE People network

How did you get started in the industry?

My safety mindset initially came around after a nasty injury I sustained whilst at work. It further developed & I began to self fund my education.  Once I had completed the NEBOSH General & joined a workplace initiative called ‘Be-safe’,  I was given an opportunity from my then employer, I’ve continued to develop myself every year & will continue to do so.

Do you have a motto or saying that you live by?

Nothing you do at work today will be as important as going home to your families & loved ones.

Who or what inspires you?

Professionally, many people inspire me, people I work with, people I meet day to day.

Simon Sinek is a great source of inspiration, as are Erik Hollnagel, Sidney Dekker, Rosa Antonio Carillo, Clive Lloyd.

I’d say most of all, I get inspiration from my family, watching them grow & learn.

If you could only eat one meal for the rest of your life, what would it be?

Ribeye steak (Medium rare), Sweet potato chips, Asparagus, & Pink Peppercorn Sauce or Dominos Chicken Wings!

What advice would you give to someone looking to getting started in the industry?

Keep trying! Don’t give up! Do something every week to develop yourself, read something relevant, volunteer with a consultancy, join professional bodies such as IOSH, IIRSM, IEMA, spend time with your current HSE Team, chat to HSE professionals on Social Media platforms, maintain professionalism on social media – don’t complain nobody is giving you a chance, go out there & make it happen!

Development is a never ending process, don’t ever think you’ve ‘made it’, great leaders never stop learning!

How do you unwind and relax?

Practice Mindfulness, spending time with my family, walking my dog, reading.

Where do you see yourself in 5 years?

I would like to be in a Senior HSE position where I can really embed & develop cultures. Any role for me has to be the right cultural fit that aligns with my values.

Would you recommend a career in the HSE industry?

HSE is a challenging profession, everyday is different. It isn’t for everyone but is well worth it.
