Bedford Care Provider Fined £550k

A Bedford-based healthcare provider has been fined after failing to act on concerns raised by an occupational health nurse

Bedford care provider fined £550k

Southwark Crown Court heard that a Ramsay Health Care (UK) employee had raised concerns with the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) in June 2014 relating to how the company’s occupational health services were run.

An investigation by the HSE found the business had failed to appoint sufficient occupational health professionals to oversee the service, compromising the safety of its staff, patients and members of the public.

The HSE served four improvement notices and also found Ramsay Health Care failed to provide adequate health surveillance for its workers.

Ramsay Health Care (UK) Operations Ltd of Hassett Street, Bedford, pleaded guilty to breaching Sections 2(1) and 3(1) of the Health and Safety at Work etc Act 1974.

It was fined £550,000 and ordered to pay costs of £36,320.44.

HSE inspector Emma Page said: “Healthcare providers should be aware of their legal duty to protect the health and safety of their employees as well as their patients and service users. HSE will not hesitate to hold those accountable who do not fulfil their legal obligations.”
