Find out more about HSE People Panel Member Paul Nicholas

The HSE People Panel is made up of specialists across different areas who have volunteered to share their insight and experience with the HSE People network

How did you get started in the industry?

In January 2006, not long after completing my undergraduate degree in Human Resource Management and Sociology, I successfully obtained a graduate trainee position as Health and Safety Advisor for a Glasgow based construction company. The rest they say is history…..

Do you have a motto or saying that you live by?

“Sometimes in life you just have to get up off the stool for another round.”

Who or what inspires you?

I am inspired each day to make a positive change to people’s lives, whether that by through my expertise within the field of occupational Health and Safety or through general mentorship of others.

If you could only eat one meal for the rest of your life, what would it be?

It would need to be a tuna salad, so I can maintain my lean, mean fighting machine look. I do love pizza but eating that every day for the rest of my life could be disastrous from a physical wellbeing perspective!

What advice would you give to someone looking to getting started in the industry?

Connect with as many Health Safety & Environmental practitioners as you can through LinkedIn. It is also really helpful if you have gained some volunteer experience within the field of HSE or you have obtained an entry level H&S qualification like the NEBOSH General Certificate.

How do you unwind and relax?

I love going out to cycle on my road bike and clocking up the miles.

Where do you see yourself in 5 years?

Doing more of what I already do and expanding my growing HSE consultancy business.

Would you recommend a career in the HSE industry?

Absolutely, if you are prepared to work hard and keep yourself up to date with recent legislation it can be a very rewarding career on many levels.
