Meet a HSE People Champion – Kelly Nicoll

HSE People is proud to be working with a team of Champions to raise the profile of the HSE industry and to support our members. Today we speak with Kelly Nicoll, Head of H&S at Doncaster Culture and Leisure Trust.

What is your job title, where do you work and what do you do?

I’m Head of H&S at Doncaster Culture and Leisure Trust. I am responsible for advice and guidance on all things Health and Safety, Mental Health for our people across 15 sites within Doncaster.

How did you get started in HSE?

Accidentally, as a lot of us have! I fell into H&S while resting as an actor. I realised that I had found my vocation and I found myself gravitating toward more health and safety focused jobs before I dove in. I signed up for my NEBOSH General Certificate in 2011, and haven’t stopped since!

Why did you want to become an HSE People Champion?

Because what we do is too important to keep it to ourselves! Not only is it a great career, and a far cry from the clipboard wielding stereotype we often face, but I have travelled the world, and feel like the work we do can really make a difference to people in a positive way.

Who or what inspires you?

The single thought that no one should go to work and not come home. That’s my drive, and if we can make people better on the way then that is a real bonus!

What are you excited about for 2023?

I still feel like I’m recovering from the pandemic to be honest, so I’m looking forward to taking more time, focusing what’s really important, and learning to let the other stuff go. I’m really looking forward to being a HSE Champion and wearing the badge with pride!

If you could have a superpower what would it be?

I’ve always been a little obsessed with the ocean, so being able to breathe underwater would be amazing!

Describe yourself in three words.

Caring, dedicated, kind.

Thank you so much Kelly, we’re looking forward to getting to know you more!
